JCI Accreditation & ISO 9000 Certification

JCI is a subsidiary of the Joint Council on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). JCAHO is the leading hospital accreditation body in the United States; the standards set for in JCAHO are the same as those under the JCI.

Prior to the survey of a medical facility by the JCI, the facility obtains a Standards Manual and begins preparation. The Standards manual of JCAHO, however, is very comprehensive; it’s a very exhaustive process simply to determine whether or not one’s facility meets the standards within the manual, let alone take corrective measures to improve whatever needs to be improved. The Joint Commission Resources assists an organization by providing survey readiness consultations and mock surveys; they provide thorough preparation for Joint Commission accreditation

This may entail a comprehensive overhaul of their services, operating systems be it documentation, time taken for various functions, active recruitment of some of the country’s best-trained physicians and other qualified & experienced personnel, or, it may just be an improvement in one or two areas.

One to Two years is the time it takes to complete the process of the JCI accreditation

Six to nine months prior to the survey, the medical facility submits their application to the JCI. After that, the facility must fill out and submit the JCI Survey Contract & Travel form.

Two months before the survey, the facility is contacted by the JCI Survey Team Leader, the one who will be in charge of the surveying methods at the facility.

Two months after the survey has taken place, the JCI sends the facility their decision & recommendations.

If JCI determines that the facility has not met its standards, the facility must submit a revised application and the process begins all over again. If, however, the decision is to accredit the facility, it means that the JCI has determined the facility meets or surpasses the requirements set forth in the Standards Manual.

Having JCI accreditation is a strong positive when a facility is attempting to promote itself as a medical tourism destination. More importantly, it means that the hospital is providing a very high level of service, which obviously is also good for the patients. Usually, the rooms in these hospitals are like those of a five-star hotel. “Better late than never,” that has been in my mind for the several weeks.

I am not an expert in the field of medical science. In fact I am an Accountancy Professional!, from the Institute of the Cost & Works Accountants of India, known as ICWAI. OK. My partner? He is an Engineer. Mechanical Engineer to boot with. Leave alone the office staff. None of our team members has any medical degree to his/her name. That is about ‘Medical’. Medical Tourism is a novel concept whereby the people move from one place of the world to another place for medical treatment. There are various factors governing the selection of the place for treatment. Spreading this concept of 'Cost effective medicare for all' is really a Medicare Mission.

Cost consideration:

For example Surgery, Organ Transplant and other Medical Treatments in India cost only 20% of the normal cost in USA. Even Insurance cover in many cases is not sufficient to undergo treatments in US or Europe.
